Beyond Headlines

Beyond Headlines: Life Struggles of Adivasi Tea Workers in North Bengal pulls back the curtain on a world of Adivasi (Scheduled Tribe) community often unseen yet vital to India's tea industry. Drawing on extensive fieldworks and rich secondary sources, the book traces their colonial-era migration, settlement in labour lines, and the persistent hardships shaped by historical oppression, economic exploitation, and political neglect. It exposes the stark realities behind the aroma of tea: chronic underpayment, landlessness, broken promises under the Plantation Labour Act, and the silent suffering of workers in both operational and abandoned gardens. Yet, this is not just a story of struggle—it is also a story of awakening Amid distress and rising migration, the narrative also captures emerging hope—youth aspirations, cultural resurgence, and growing resistance. As young generation seeks education, dignity and life beyond the tea gardens, new voices rise against injustice, reshaping identity and hope. Bold, honest, and urgent, this book invites readers to witness a community at a crossroads—and to join the call for change.
