About the book

George Orwell (1903-1950, born as Eric Arthur Blair), the socialist writer, is best known for his novels and non-fiction writings. Indians are interested in Orwell, because he was born in Motihari, Bengal province and he served as a police officer in Burma. He did not like British imperialism and stayed in London and Paris. Orwell's Burmese Days and Anima Farm are best-known for their criticism of the British rule and Communism in Russia respectively. He served the Loyalists against Franco in the Spanish Civil War and reported of his experience as a democratic socialist. Ironically Orwell hated the menace to socialism. Orwell died of TB in 1950. Orwell was a master of English prose. His essays like “Shooting an Elephant” and “Politics and the English language” are influential.
