Northeast Christians’ Contributions to Nation Building

This book is a volume of research articles and reflections by eminent writers on the history of Christianity in India’s Northeast and its impact on society, particularly the tribal communities. The authors analyse how Christian missionaries braved remote areas, befriended the indigenous people, won their hearts, and got accepted to work among them. Through faith, education, and public services, missionaries of different denominations mainstreamed the people and changed their approaches towards life, leading to improved literacy rates, healthcare access, and social cohesion within the communities. They transformed communities into credible and responsible citizens, who, in turn, richly contributed to building a modern India. A personal account of a prominent peace and reconciliation activist on Christian initiatives to build peace among communities also adds value to the contents of this book. About the Editors John S. Shilshi is a retired IPS officer who had served in the state and central governments. He is the author of three books – Vale of Tears: Untold stories of violence in Manipur, From Heemal to Hilton: the Kashmir story, and Manipur’s Experience with Armed Forces (Special)Powers Act. He is also the editor of NECARF Review, an opinion website run by the North East Catholic Research Forum. Prof. Salam Irene is a retired Professor and former HOD, Department of History, Manipur University. She taught at the Centre of Post Graduate Studies, JNU Imphal campus from 1977, and also taught in the Manipur University from 1980 – 2016. She has written seven books and several articles, and also presented papers in national and international conferences.
