Paths to Social Transformation

An Evaluative Study of KESS Community Interventions

by Jean Maria George and Ginto Chirayath

2026

About the book

"Paths to Social Transformation: An Evaluative Study of KESS Community Interventions", evaluates the socio-economic and psychological impact of the YUVA and HIV Care initiatives implemented by KESS. Despite the distinct nature of these two programs - one focusing on youth empowerment and the other on long-term clinical and family support for HIV-positive individuals - both interventions share a common objective: transitioning beneficiaries from a state of dependency to one of self-sustaining autonomy. Employing a mixed-method approach, this study analyses data across thematic clusters ranging from baseline vulnerability to community advocacy. The findings reveal that holistic interventions, which integrate material support with psychological counselling and market-aligned training, significantly enhance participant outcomes. Specifically, the data demonstrates high levels of domestic stigma reduction, increased household economic resilience, and a notable shift in self-identity from "vulnerable patient/youth" to "dignified professional/community advocate." The research concludes that the KESS model effectively fosters human agency by replacing traditional aid-based dependency with structural empowerment.
