About the book

Women on Screen: Feminist Film Theories in Praxis is an edited volume that explores the feminist interventions in cinema. It discusses the ways in which women's identity, resistant subjectivities, and the body are constructed and represented in Indian and global cinematic narratives. The book discourses a whole range of representations from the silent voice and the politics of solidarity to the evolving feminine gaze, the politics of memory, and the remaking of the classics. The theoretical frameworks involve decolonial theory, disability theory, feminist political discourse, intersectionality, queer theory and others. The edited volume discusses, on the one hand, melodrama, masala, political biography, and genre cinema, while on the other it foregrounds feminist interventions by women filmmakers as well as the shifting dynamics of spectatorship, scopophilia, and cosmeticised visibility. The chapters included in this volume represent the narratives of Women's solidarity, resilience, sexuality, widowhood, trauma, and politics of desire from feminist films perspectives. In addition, the volume goes beyond the world of cinema to examine the ways in which the emergence of the new media, in terms of the web series, is transforming the politics of visibility and backlash in the digital age.
