Eshita Chakraborty

Biography

Dr. Eshita Chakraborty is an accomplished Hindustani classical vocalist, music scholar, researcher, and teacher, specializing in Khayal vocal music. She is presently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hindustani Classical Music (Vocal), Sangit Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, where she has been serving since 2009. She has been associated with music from an early age and has performed at prestigious venues in India and abroad. Dr. Chakraborty holds a Ph.D. from Visva-Bharati on Vocal Cords: Scientific Details towards Musical Aspects. She completed her M.Phil. from the University of Delhi, securing First Class First, with research on Importance of Riaz in Indian Classical Music, which was subsequently published as a book. She also completed her M.A. in Music from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, securing First Class First, and is a Gold Medallist in Khayal. A recipient of Indian National Scholarships in Music from the Government of India, she has also earned diplomas in Hindustani Classical Vocal, Nazrulgeeti, and Rabindra Sangeet. Her academic and research interests extend across Hindustani classical music, voice culture, vocal anatomy, music education, Rabindra Sangeet, musical traditions of Bengal, and the relationship between music, science, culture, and spirituality. Dr. Chakraborty has published extensively in research journals and has presented papers at national and international seminars and conferences. Her publications include research on voice culture, vocal mechanism, classical music traditions, Baul culture, Rabindra Sangeet, and contemporary perspectives on music. She is also the author of Importance of Riaz in Indian Classical Music and Swarmalika Evam Tarana Sankalan. She has supervised Ph.D., M.Phil., and M.P.A. research scholars in diverse areas of Indian classical and folk music. She has also served in several academic capacities, including Ph.D. examiner, research committee member, Board of Studies member, paper setter, moderator, practical and theoretical examiner, resource person, and chairperson for musical orientation programmes. With decades of experience in performance, teaching, research, and academic service, Dr. Chakraborty represents a meaningful synthesis of Indian classical musical tradition, rigorous scholarship, scientific inquiry, and contemporary music education.
