Mahesh Dattani’s Play Where Did I Leave My Purdah? is a journey of a women who tries to cope up with her haunting past. Nazia Sahiba is a gang rape victim, and has seen her sister Zarine being killed in front of her eyes. The scar of partition and the trauma associated with it can be overtly seen in Dattani ’s characters. The ‘burqa’ plays an important role and becomes a metaphor for differe nt identities and their manifestations. The paper traces the journey of self - identification of its three main women characters and draws a parallel between Henrik Ibsen ’s Nora and Dattani ’s Nazia. The quest of Nazia is a quest of a postmodern woman trying to gain a foothold in the ever slipping sand of identity
