Harivansh Rai Bachchan, the famous Hindi poet is one of the first translators in Hindi who translated t he poetic dialogues of the four tragedies of Shakespeare into poetic form and prose dialogues into prose form. He also translated them into his own contexts and those contexts had been different from the original. He thought upon his own translation theory and discussed it in the prefaces of his translated works. Bachchan’s translation theory has something to say in terms of form and content. When a Source Language Text is translated into a Target Language Text it has to go through a process of transformati on since the contexts which defines the form and content varies from one culture to another. In my proposed paper I shall focus on the decisions Bachchan had to take while translating in search of an equivalent form and content from his own culture in relation to the original. The conflict between time and the protagonist is one of the major themes in Shakespeare ’s tragedies. This conflict also leads to the concept of ageing and the struggle between youth and old age. In my proposed paper I would try to find out how this tension between youth and old age is rendered by Bachchan in his translation of Shakespeare ’s Macbeth and Othello. Bachchan translated Omar Khayyam and W.B. Yeats much earlier than Shakespeare. Both Omar and Yeats are known for their interes t in ageing. Hence the proposed paper shall also focus on how Bachchan’s translations of Shakespeare are influenced by or related with his early translations of Omar and Yeats. And how Bachchan himself responded to the tension between youth and old age in his original composition, both prose and verse.
