Abstract
This paper is an attempt to highlight Walt Whitman ’s mystic experience coupled with cosmic consciousness and his anticipation of the modern stream-of-consciousness. It also aims to project him as the representative of universal outlook, a transcendental symbolist and the poet of both personal and universal self. Moreover, he is unique in his style of presenting and handling of themes like birth, growth, maturity . Besides being a lover of liberty , he is said to have had political consciousness and universal mystic consciousness
